Lamborghini Shows Off All-Electric Lanzador SUV (2023)

The Lanzador is one of the sleekest SUV designs we’ve ever seen and promises in excess of 1,300 horsepower from its electric drivetrain. Lamborghini unveiled its first-ever all-electric vehicle some weeks back, following an aptly timed image leak.

The Lanzador, a four-seater with high ground clearance, sheds the predictable Lamborghini contour in favor of something a little more practical. The luxury automaker posted a cinematic teaser of its new model to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday ahead of this weekend’s Monterey Car Week.

The 15-second video featured roughly three seconds of the car’s silhouette, but fans were confident those seconds hinted at Lamborghini’s previous EV murmurings. The video was enough to prompt a French automotive Instagram account to post images of what appeared to match the teased silhouette.

With Lamborghini’s official Monterey Car Week announcement behind us, we know the leaked images were indeed of the Lanzador. The company’s first 100% electric vehicle features a crossover-like shape with a higher ground clearance than typically found on a Lamborghini.

As some predicted before Thursday’s unveiling, the car resembles a blend of the popular Urus and the Estoque sedan concept that never made it past 2008. The front bonnet, though short, includes a small frunk, while the glass tailgate opens wide for maximum cargo transport.

Inside, the Lanzador offers a 2+2 seat layout (two seats in the front, two in the back). Adjustable rear seats allow the driver to fill the back of the vehicle with cargo, making the Lanzador a bit more versatile than some of Lamborghini’s other nameplates.

To make the driver “feel like a pilot,” the company introduced a sporty steering wheel and a slight seat lift, which gives the driver a better view of the road.

The Lanzador will feature an electric motor on each axle that together generate over a megawatt (one million watts) of power, which equates to 1,341 horsepower, according to Car and Driver.

Lamborghini says its software and control systems will be a defining factor of the Lanzador, with wheel speed control, active suspension, and active aerodynamics utilizing the front air shutter and a movable splitter. These features help create a more pleasant driving experience and increase range.

Speaking of range, Lamborghini has yet to disclose exactly how far the Lanzador can travel on a single charge. The company’s release does claim the vehicle is powered by a “new generation high-performance battery” that “ensures long range,” but specific numbers weren’t provided.

Whatever the Lanzador’s range is, it’ll probably be on par with rival Ferrari’s first EV, which is expected to release in 2025. Before anyone with deep pockets gets too excited, the Lanzador won’t be available until at least 2028.

Even so, with plans to make its entire fleet hybrid or all-electric by the end of 2024, Lamborghini is diving headfirst into the EV game.

The Lanzador is merely its first nameplate to skip the internal combustion engine entirely; other models, like the Huracán, will transition toward electrification by becoming plug-in hybrids within the next year or so.

Lamborghini’s €1.5 billion ($1.63 billion) plan will ideally help the Volkswagen-owned company shift “towards a more sustainable future while always remaining faithful to our DNA,” according to president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann.
