This means the needle bar goes forward-the open needles clear the web. Then the weft thread is laid on the needles and the weft thread falls loosely, now while the needle bar draws back, the weft is pulled in the open needles.

Again the needle bar draws back and the presser bar drops, then the needle loops closes and the weft is drawn back through the web.

This time the needles open, a new row is been added to the web which drops under gravity.

Just this basic process can still be recognized in all machines, even as new technologies takes over the industry.

Comparison to Hand Knitting

Some stitch patterns like the tuck stitches are much easier to produce with a knitting machine.

Others like the garter stitch can also be produced with machine knitting which can take longer time but is still much faster than hand knitting.
