There are various types of knitting machines, out here ranging from simple spool or board templates with no moving parts to very highly complex  top mechanism all controlled by electronics.

The process of the knitting machine goes like this, that is, the early flat bed stocking frame which has low carbon steel bearded needles where the tips are reflexed and could be depressed onto a hollow line way closing the loop.

The needles are supported on a needle bar(bed) that passed back and forth, to and from the operator. The beards are then simultaneously depressed by a presser bar.

This means the needle bar goes forward-the open needles clear the web. Then the weft thread is laid on the needles and the weft thread falls loosely, now while the needle bar draws back, the weft is pulled in the open needles.

Again the needle bar draws back and the presser bar drops, then the needle loops closes and the weft is drawn back through the web.

This time the needles open, a new row is been added to the web which drops under gravity.

Just this basic process can still be recognized in all machines, even as new technologies takes over the industry.

There are so many knitting machines on the market place, you can differentiate them by their sizes, brands and capacities.

Comparison to Hand Knitting

Some stitch patterns like the tuck stitches are much easier to produce with a knitting machine.

Others like the garter stitch can also be produced with machine knitting which can take longer time but is still much faster than hand knitting.

Machine knitting saves a considerable amount of time but does require learning to operate the machines correctly.

Most if not all hand knitting patterns can be worked up on a machine, either identically or in a similar design, but some are simpler by hand, whilst others are easier on a machine.

Hand knitting patterns are designed to flip the fabric on every row so that the knitter uses consistently the dominant hand.

However, machine knitting is consistently knitting with the fabric facing the same way.

Flatbed machines knit back and forth, while circular machines knit continuously in the round.
