A few hours ago, Huawei’s latest phone, the P40 Series, was revealed via a press conference streamed as though live, and presented by Richard Yu, CEO Huawei Consumer Business Group.
Yu said that 2020 was going to be a big year and the company’s best was ahead of it.
In this post, is everything you need to know.
Design & Display
Inspired by the beauty and form of flowing water, the Quad-Curve Overflow Display is innovated to dissolve the barriers of vision and imagination on every edge.
Plus with the 90 Hz refresh rate, you can enjoy an immersive view over the entire fluid screen.
The mounting middle frame and protective round corners enhance the harmonious feel from your eyes to your hand.
It’s fair to say that Huawei has pushed the boat out with the design of its new phones. The gleaming finishes, using either a gloss or matte glass back, are eye-poppingly good-looking.
The Silver Frost option, a shimmering matte effect, is the most attractive and promises to be fingerprint-resistant, too. The five colors are: Black, Ice White Deep Sea Blue, Silver Frost and Blush Gold.
The display is a 90Hz screen, for a smooth, judder-free experience. The screens on both the P40 and P40 Pro are big: 6.1in and 6.58in respectively.
There are twin front-facing cameras and these are buried in the display, peeping out from the top-left of the display.
The previous phone, the Mate 30 Pro, introduced a waterfall display which spilled down the long edges of the phone.
Here, the waterfall is pouring off the top and bottom as well, though in each case the edge display is less extreme than on the Mate 30 Pro, so there’s room for a conventional volume rocker button on the side, unlike the Mate 30 Pro.
Camera
Huawei claims it will take stunning low light photos and a new mode, Single Shot, will beat the night mode on rival phones.
The P40 Pro main camera is a 50MP sensor with Red, Yellow, Yellow and Blue (RYYB) composition instead of the regular Red, Green and Blue arrangement on other sensors. This is designed to pull in more light more quickly.
The sensors are pretty big on the P40 Pro. Where rivals regularly have sensors sized as small as 1/ 2.55in, here there’s a sensor as big as 1/ 1.28in, which is big.
The second sensor on the P40 is a 16MP ultra-wide while on the P40 Pro it is aimed at videography and is a 40MP sensor, also RYYB.
On the P40 the final lens is an 8MP telephoto. However, on the P40 Pro, the 12MP telephoto lens is a periscope, offering 5x optical zoom on the Pro and on the Pro Plus, thanks to a multi-reflection design, 10x optical zoom.
The most powerful zoom yet on a smartphone, Huawei says. Richard Yu compared the results to the latest Samsung S20 Ultra phone and claimed victory at 100x zoom shots.
The telephoto is also an RYYB sensor. The fourth camera, found on the Pro model, is a 3D Depth sensor.
Connectivity
All the phones Huawei has released, all of them, are 5G-compatible, so that as more and more 5G networks go live, the phones will be able to make the most of them.
Sony’s latest flagship is only available in a 5G version and it’s a bold choice. The chip inside the P40 series is the Kirin 990 5G and Yu said it beat rival chips by a distance.
